Wii Maneuvering VS Hand-Held Controller - your thoughts?

Friday, May 30th, 2008

I’ve been reading a lot of stories out there about people complaining about getting up off the couch to play Wii - some folks apparently like having a handheld controller like those for PS2, PS3, and XBox. I can see both sides of the story, being an avid PS2 fan (and let me tell you, I LOVE my Logitech Wireless PS2 controllers, sorry for the shameless plug) I am glad that my family has discovered the get-off-your-tukus stylings of Wii and games like SSX Blur for Wii. I love the SSX series with a handheld controller, and I was mindblown to go flying down the mountain standing up - the ONLY way to really enjoy SSX Blur! Try it!

What are your controller thoughts? Post in the comments, we’d love to hear from you.

Ubisoft is Planning A Prince of Persia Spinoff

Friday, May 30th, 2008

According to a Wired post (from a post at the boards at NeoGAF), Ubisoft is planning a Prince of Persia spinoff game.  Everyone is assuming that the E3 Conference in July will bring about Ubisoft’s news about this and other games.

Translated from the French site LiveWii:

From the mouth of our venerated Melkor (which was present at Ubidays), news which should at least alleviate the spirits towards the French firm: not, our to defer n’ did not dégoté phone number Raymond the Jade, but it returned with the confirmation d’ prince off Persia specific to Wii. Announced like a spin-off of l’ opus currently developed on the platforms next-gen, little d’ information filtered as for its contents. One can already bet an artistic director directed towards a particular use of Wiimote and Nunchuk as it was the case with the bearing of Swords Rival. Perhaps we will have more details at the time of l’ E3 in July as for the true contents of the play.

I’m sure that the awesome translation you just read said, in a nutshell, that they heard that Prince of Persia will be off-spun by Ubisoft.  Oh, and it’ll use the nunchuck and Wii-mote too.

Shaun White’s Snowboarding for Wii - USING THE WII BALANCE BOARD!

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Slashdot posted some information on a new game that Ubisoft will be releasing - a snowboarding game called “Shaun White’s Snowboarding” that uses the beloved Wii Balance Board and the Wiimote as the control media.

“During Ubidays 2008, Ubisoft revealed that its upcoming snowboarding title, Shaun White Snowboarding, will be coming to Nintendo Wii. More exciting, the publisher revealed that the game will support Nintendo’s Wii Balance Board. Although members of the press were not allowed to play the game at the event, an Ubisoft representative was on hand to demo the setup. The game is played with both the Balance Board and Wii-mote, using the latter to control tricks.”

We’re pretty big fans of the SSX Series of games here at WeKnowWii.com, so you can imagine our excitement!
We haven’t been able to get our hands on Wii Ski yet that also uses the Wii Balance Board, but we’re waiting to rock the slopes in our living room!

Go order Wii Fit and the Balance Board if you haven’t already - it’s even healthy!

“SimCity Creator” Announced for Wii and DS

Friday, May 30th, 2008

In an article at Wired’s Blog, Wii and DS fans are going to be treated to EA Games’ reinvention of the classic SimCity game series with SimCity Creator.

The game, which will hit the DS and Wii on September 22, lets players use the two system’s unorthodox control systems to zone land, place roads, and manage the ongoing welfare of your own customized metropolis.

We’re definitely excited for this!

Medal of Honor: Vanguard for Wii

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Lately I’ve been playing the heck out of Medal of Honor: Vanguard by EA Games. MOH-V is the tenth installment in EA’s series of World War II first person shooter games, and I’ve been enjoying it immensely. You play Corporal Frank Keegan of the 82nd Airborne in MOH-V, and the game is a mix of emotion and skill as you cut around corners, firing brief half-second bursts as you pop your head above the walls long enough as to not get hit by snipers.

First things first, the bad stuff (in this editor’s humble opinion, of course…)
MOH-V has at times some pretty muttled graphics - I found this specifically on some of the long distance views, and in a lot of high contrast light situations. I need to qualify that statement with the fact that this happens on just a few occasions. Overall, the graphics are fine - and where I have complaints about a few scenes, I also have major praises for many of them. One sparkling example of this is in the last mission, with a sniper rifle weapon upgrade; when you place the rifle’s scope to your eye, the view is absolutely stunning and beautiful - as beautiful as a war-torn landscape could be, I suppose, but still crisp, clear, and full of graphic detail of the surroundings.

The other negative thing I have to report, again in my humble opinion, is the length of the game. It’s too short! For the amount of time that I blew through the game, I was ready to get in the car and go purchase the previous installments!

(the Damage Indicator shows you from which direction you were hit, and displays red)

Missions:
For Medal of Honor: Vanguard, you navigate through several missions that take you from beaches to warehouses, to trenches and row house fighting, nearly hand-to-hand at times (and that’s if you DON’T get a punch or rifle stock jab in - there are lots of opportunities). The Italian and German soldiers are tough in all levels of difficulty, and the game is exciting.

The missions are:
Operation Husky, the attack on Sicily
Operation Neptune, the attack on Normandy
Operation Market Garden, fighting in Holland behind enemy lines
Operation Varsity, which was the largest and most successful campaign in history

Multiplayer
There is a multiplayer component to this game as well - play through several types of games, including

  • Deathmatch
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Capture the Flag
  • King of the Hill
  • Scavenger Hunt

(the X means that is an Allied soldier! Don’t shoot!)

Weapons
Medal of Honor: Vanguard has a large selection of weapons to master. The German MP40 submachine gun and Thompson submachine guns; single shot K98, Enfield, and M1 Garand rifles; the STG 44 and BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle); stick and pineapple Frag Grenades; the Colt 45 pistol, and the very excellent and powerful M9 bazooka. You can also man an MG 42 machine gun nest, which is awesome in firepower, but very difficult to aim. Think quantity and not quality with these.

Movement
Moving around with the wiimote and nunchuck is actually quite intuitive, despite the reviews that other sites have given this trait. Your weapon is trained (pointed) with the wiimote, and the joystick on the nunchuck moves you around. Top button on the wiimote makes you stand up and jump, and the bottom button has two levels of lower maneuvring - squatting and crawling. One of the best features of MOH-V is the ability to crawl around a wall, sneak your head out, and fire. Pressing A on the wiimote makes your character stop moving and use the iron sights on weapons. This is how the accuracy component comes into play.

Medal of Honor: Vanguard is well worth picking up. It has very exciting and grabbing action - you’ll be breathing quietly in your own living room trying not to let the enemy know you’re waiting outside the door.

Wii Fit Workouts - try using your Favorites function!

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

wiifit_logo.jpg

There has been some rumbling on the ‘Internets about how people want to be able to create a timed workout (30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, etc) with the Wii Fit - it can be a bit cumbersome to menu between items for each workout segment that you want to use. WeKnowWii suggests trying the Favorites function on Wii Fit. It’s by no means ideal, but for the meantime, it can knock out seconds between blocks for a more efficient workout! Give it a try!

If you don’t have your Wi Fit yet, get on over to Amazon and get one!

The NYKO Sensor Bar for Wii saved the day!

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

A few months ago we made a post about the NYKO Wireless Sensor Bar for the Wii - a wireless, battery powered device that is supposed to boost the wii-mote’s distance from the TV and just be all-around more powerful.

nyco_bar1.JPG

Well, come to find out ALL of these are true, plus a few more pieces of awesomeness!

I have been playing Medal of Honor: Vanguard over the last few days (a review is coming!) and I had been having ridiculous trouble with the action on the screen - the controller would act like it lost signal, bouncing all over the place, making me lose lives, score, et al. While out shopping this evening we decided to get a NYKO Sensor Bar to see if our Wii-issue sensor bar had some issues. When I got home and tried it out, I was astonished with the detail, accuracy, and overall signal strength that we have now with the new sensor bar! Thanks NYKO!

Did I mention, also, that it’s WIRELESS?!

nyco_bar_item_tag1.jpg

Operating the sensor bar is - well, there really is no operation. Hit the button on the right when you want to use it, hold the button down until the blue light power_led1.jpggoes away when you’re done. Since it does use AA batteries (X4) for power, it has a switch on the rear of the bar that gives you a warning every our, two hours, or not at all to remind you to turn it off when you’re done Wii-ing.

I actually left the wired stock-Wii sensor bar plugged in for dual-triangulation-fun. I went into the kitchen (25 feet away) and was able to maneuvre like I was 6 feet from the TV!

Check out the NYKO Wireless Sensor at Amazon - it’s cheap, and WiKnowWii says it’s an awesome addition to your Wii gaming experience.

The Wii is Perfect for Black and White Gaming

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Remember the movie Sin City?  Here comes Madworld.

madworld1.jpg

In an article at MTV Multiplayer, Shigenori Nishikawa, developer of 2009’s violent “Madworld” talks about how excellent the Wii is for black-and-white contrast design.  From the article:

“For consoles like the 360 and PlayStation 3 the level of high-quality graphics is so extreme. I wanted things to be simpler than that.” He said he had been told that he needed to make a Wii game. “We thought about ‘What can we do that’s new on the Wii?’ And we came out the white and black graphics.”

Check out the article, and check out the game when it comes out “some time” in 2009.  We’re certainly looking forward to it.
