Working Out with Wii

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

There are a small amount of titles available right now that are geared just towards making you sweat; workout “games” that challenge your lazy, fast food styles.

Wait, no, those are MY styles.  Sorry!

Let’s check out the workout-specific titles - we own a few, and we love them!  The essential, seemingly instigating game/controller is the Wii Fit (and Balance Board), so let’s start with that:

wiifit

Wii Fit - the game keeps track of your activity, tests your endurance and balance, teaches you some Yoga, and makes fun of you when you either don’t do much or you don’t play for a few weeks.  You gotta love a persistent title!  The game comes with the Balance Board and the Wii Fit disc.  There are tons and tons and tons of accessories for the Wii Fit Balace Board, check them out when you have a minute.

Here’s one I have not played yet - if you’ve given this a whirl, would you comment on the post below?  EA Sports Active is a new title from - well, it’s from EA - and it looks pretty cool.  Check out the video below:

EA Sports Active is not available for retail yet, but it’s pre-orderable and around $60.00.  Preorder a copy!

My Fitness Coach is something my wife has been playing - I wrote a post about this a few days ago, and my wife seems to enjoy the game.  It’s a motivator - helps push you to maintain speed and endurance, and gives you motivation!  It’s on sale right now for $19.97!

Ok, Jillian Michaels is hot.  She’s hot, and she has a workout title for Wii.  Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2009 is the title.  I’ve heard acceptable reviews of the game - it’s the workout that’s important, right?  Check out a trailer below:

Now last on this list is Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout.  This is another title I have not played, and before I went looking, hadn’t heard much about it.  Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout is going to be released on March 31, 2009 - but you can preorder the title here.

Check out all Wii workout related stuff!

My Fitness Coach

My wife’s been using this game in her work out sessions - My Fitness Coach is a title that gives you a motivator of sorts to work out with.  The motivator keeps you kicking and working hard during the workout with words of encouragement and the drive to go harder in the workout.

If it keeps my wife motivated during exercise, then I bet it will keep you motivated!

Amazon has My Fitness Coach for UNDER $20 right now - I don’t remember what we paid, but it certainly was more than $20!

Check out a quick video of My Fitness Coach:

Indiana Jones: Staff of Kings Trailer

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Check out this trailer for the new LucasArts title, Indiana Jones: Staff of Kings!  Release date is still TBA.

Dirt 2: Whoa.

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Codemasters has produced Dirt 2 - another crash-em-up, smack you in the face title.  If you ever played the original Dirt title, you know what I mean.  I don’t believe that Dirt was ever released for Wii (I’ve only played it on XBox), but it’s a great game nonetheless.  We should be seeing Dirt 2 sometime in September of 2009.

Check out this trailer:

Call of Duty: World at War for Wii

Friday, January 30th, 2009

My sister bought me Call of Duty: World at War for Christmas this year, and I just finished playing it all the way through consecutively on two different skill levels.  For the record, this is one of the greatest games I have ever played on any format, any platform, and any subject.  The movements are beautiful, the weapon choices are vast, and the overall flow of the game is a lot of fun - enough to keep you occupied for several hours at a time.

This last weekend, as an example, I played it for eight solid hours on a Saturday.

Here’s some video of the game - even the video breaks are good!  It’s also pretty sweet to be in the “heat of battle” with Kiefer Sutherland yelling orders to you!

Nerf-N-Strike for Wii

Friday, December 19th, 2008

This gets surprisingly good reviews - Nerf-N-Strike has a bundle package with a nerf weapon for the Wiimote and apparently a bunch of fun.

Some PR for the game:

  • The Search for the N-Strike Elite Begins
  • Bundled with every game, comes the revolutionary SWITCH SHOT EX-3 which transforms between a live Nerf blaster and a Wii remote shooting peripheral for the game
  • Play with over 25 NERF Blasters including the MAVERICK REV-6, VULCAN EBF-25, LONGSHOT CS-6, and many never seen before
  • Explore a top-secret NERF facility and unravel the mystery of the unknown threat that awaits
  • Go head to head with up to 4 players using additional Wii Remotes and SWITCH SHOT EX-3 blasters

Holy Crap: MadWorld Seasonal Trailer

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Have you seen this thing?  Whoa!

It’s even been censored for it’s “graphic” nature.

<chuckle>

This is supposed to be pretty excellent when it comes out coming up in 2009!

Call of Duty: World at War Review

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

CNet has a decent article about Activision’s Call of Duty: World at War for Wii.  It’s a pretty informative article, and gives an “Excellent” rating.  I am really hoping to get this game for Christmas from Santa…  From the article by Chris Walters:

The default controls feel balanced and well-mapped, but there are a few hang-ups. The fast and deadly melee attack is performed by shaking the Wii Remote or hitting down on the D pad. Unfortunately, shaking will shift your aim abruptly, often causing you to miss your target. The D pad is the better option, but melee attacks will still tend to go astray more often than they should. The D pad is also used for switching weapons, so resting your thumb in the A-button/D-pad area is generally advisable. Unfortunately, grenades are mapped to the + button, and shifting your thumb halfway down the remote can be awkward. It’s a minor inconvenience, though, and all things considered, World at War’s control scheme is well-suited for the rigors of war.

HEY SANTA!

Ah, I’m sure he can hear me…

Strong Bad’s Episode 5: 8-Bit is Enough

Ok, whoa.  Deep Silver’s release of Cursed Mountain’s “Nightmare” trailer.

What do you think?  Release date is still TBA.

The Conduit: What’s Going On Here?

Friday, December 5th, 2008

High Voltage Software’s The Conduit has been getting some incredible press lately.  The technology that has been created to work with Wiimotes and control is apparently pretty stellar, as are some of the mapping and rendering techs that have been used in the game.  Check out this video:

An article at BusinessWeek of all palces comments on the game and the technology:

So far, the game’s best feature are its graphics, which look great. We’re not talking Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 quality, but High Voltage’s (the developer) proprietary technology allows them to create a sprawling city environment with an impressive level of detail, including shimmering water, real time reflections and sweet fire effects. Aliens appear cool and menacing, with glowing eyes and large, contorted bodies. Weapons look great, as Ford can easily fire off a few rounds with his pistol before seamlessly transitioning to his assault rifle. Even better, the action moves at a brisk pace, with only a few hiccups when too many enemies clutter the screen.

Whoa.  This is coming out in Q1 of 2009.  And I will hopefully be playing it.

Ghostbusters Wii

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

I guess we’re behind the times a little here, but GHOSTBUSTERS WII!!!!  Vivendi is releasing this game on June 16 of 2009, and you can guarantee that yours truly will be playing the heck out of this, as soon as it hits the house.  I found a trailer of it, below, and Amazon is pre-order selling now.  I know it’s Christmas and all, and it’s not coming out until next summer, but it’s Ghostbusters!

More games by Vivendi here - the Wii-only list is here.  There are so many good games listed for sale by Vivendi that I wanted to include all platforms.

A quick Ghostbusters description:

The Ghostbusters are back in an all-new story penned by the original creators, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis! With Manhattan newly overrun by ghosts and other supernatural creatures, it’s up to you to take on the role of a new recruit joining the original film cast of the famous Ghostbusters team. Equipped with a variety of unique weapons and gadgets, you will hunt, fight and capture a wide range of uncanny phantasms and demons in an all new funny and frightening battle to save New York City from its latest paranormal plague. Just remember to not cross the streams!

FRAGILE’s New Character

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

IGN had a post on a new character that’s emerging in the Fragile release in Japan in about a month.  From IGN’s post:

The big reveal for this latest update is a new character, Shin. The white-haired Shin is a young scientist whose genius has made him the target of envy from his peers. There’s a catch to his smarts, though. Shin’s not the talker. The catch phrase provided for him by Bandai Namco (each character has one of these) is “Words are really an inefficient means of communication.”

The actor playing Shin, Toshio Furukawa, should be familiar, if you ever played Metal Gear Solid (SNAAAAAKE!).  Furukawa played Roy Campbell and Jann Lee in Metal Gear Solid.  Namco Bandai has a good one on their hands.
